A little help with your drop.

Everything here applies to Keydrop from the Mac App Store. If something does not match what you see, email and say which version you have.

Connect once

  1. Install Keydrop from the Mac App Store and open it.
  2. Choose Connect your agent, then Copy instructions for my agent, and paste them into your local coding agent. The text contains configuration instructions, not a credential.
  3. Let your agent add Keydrop to its MCP configuration and install the included Keydrop skill. Restart that client if it asks. Keep the app in your Applications folder.
  4. Ask your agent to save a key with Keydrop. It supplies the exact Keychain service and account names.

For manual configuration, the bundled server is /Applications/Keydrop.app/Contents/MacOS/Keydrop with the single argument --mcp. A local MCP client that can launch a stdio server is required. The agent skill's canonical copy is at /skill/SKILL.md; agents can re-fetch it any time, and the copy inside the app is the offline fallback.

Save a key

Check the service and account shown in the popup. Type or paste your credential into the secure field, then choose Save to Keychain. Existing items require a second explicit Replace in Keychain. Cancel closes the request without saving. Unanswered requests expire after five minutes.

From version 1.1.0: if your agent suggested a provider page, Keydrop shows the site name as a link. Its help text says the agent suggested it. It opens in your browser only when you click it, and Keydrop does not verify the page.

The hint under the field

Keydrop recognizes many well-known key formats and may say "Looks like an OpenAI key" while you type. If the key looks like it belongs to a different provider than the destination names suggest, or has a trailing space or line break, Keydrop says so. These hints are advisory. Save is always your call.

Where did my clipboard go?

Keydrop clears the clipboard after a successful paste into the secure field. The pasted text stays in the field until you save or cancel. Earlier entries in a clipboard-history app belong to that app and may remain there.

Another tool asks for permission

Apple Keychain protects stored items with macOS access controls. Approve access only for the tool you intended. Keydrop does not promise unattended reads from other tools, and it never weakens the access controls on an item.

The popup did not appear

An agent session that was open when Keydrop was updated, reinstalled, or quit does not see the tool again until that session is restarted; reconnecting the MCP server inside the session is not enough. Updating Keydrop does not refresh an agent that is already running the old copy. From version 1.1.1 the agent receives the status restart_required and should ask you to restart it; older copies show a Keychain error ending in (-67049). Either way: restart the agent, then try again. If your agent says the Keydrop tool is missing, repeat the connection step above.
